What do you do when you feel lonely at night but can't sleep?
When I was a child, I would go through the “I can't sleep” section — I would stay awake until three in the morning before I would cry for my parents to comfort me. This happens every night for maybe a few months. Let me just say, my favorite memory (and my parents).
What to do when you are sleepy but can't sleep?
But one of the things that stuck with me from then on was my mother's teaching me to help calm down. He would ask me to close my eyes and take a picture of the treasure chest. After that, he would tell me to take all my thoughts, one by one, and put them in that chest - and when I was done, I would lock it.
I'm not saying this is the last sleep solution (although I admit that I sometimes use it when I miss home). But I know how hard it can be to fight back when you are stressed, anxious, or worried about what the future holds for you.
Why do i feel
lonely at night.
So, when you don't seem to be turning it off, it's always best to have a backup plan - and I have 19 options that you can try right now (unless you're reading this in the office, in that case, don't try to sleep).
1. Think positively
It's so simple - science says it takes your mind out of those negative thoughts ("It's too late, I'll never sleep at this level," "I'll be very tired tomorrow at work," "This stinks") will calm you down and make you sleepy.
2. Choose One Focus
To Focus
Do you know how they keep trying to count the sheep? Yes, focusing on something specific (like filling a treasure chest) can be just what you need to sleep. Choose to focus on your breathing, or repeat the relaxing mantra in your head - as long as it's not "I can't sleep," because see above.
3. Exercise Fatigue
Deceive your brain to think you are exhausted, well, pretending to be yourself. Focus on the types of things you would feel tired, such as dangling eyes, a dark room, or the feeling of drowning in your bed - and before you know it, you may just find yourself!
4. Adjust Your Heat
What is your best place to sleep? Although you can completely control the heating and cooling system in your home, you can still control your body. Therefore, place a sweater near your face when it is too hot or cover when it is too cold. Science proves that the ideal sleep temperature is 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit, so it's best to shoot that!
5. Read
No, not on Kindle or on your phone, but with a solid, paper-based book - to help you, here are 21 books recommended by career coaches. Light up the lights in your room (or use the light) enough for you to see clearly, and read - don't worry about remembering the story or going to a particular page, just inject it until you feel like falling asleep.
6. Listen to Music
Now, I'm not suggesting that you blow up a powerful album (unless it works for you), but some simple, clear, crash music may be ready to make your eyes fall.
7. Or Try the Podcast
or audiobook
Choose your favorite podcast or inactive audiobook, preferably crowded, and let cool words calm your mind. It’s not the last detail - it’s about giving yourself a comforting background sound.
Bonus Tip: Try a sleep podcast with me that actually aims to fill you up in bed (you’ll be amazed at how well it works).
8. Or White Sounds
Sometimes unbearable silence is what keeps you up — so try a white sound app to fill the space with subtle sounds.
9. Or Meditation
Program
Download a breathing app like Headspace, or a natural sound app that will soothe your thoughts and make you feel like you’re sleeping in the ocean.
(For other apps, try these eight free apps!)
10. Expand
Yes, you can try this sleep hack without getting out of bed. Put your legs on the wall to calm your central nervous system, or try a baby pose or baby pose to relax your body. Alternatively, perform simple leg and arm movements and exercises on your back to eliminate any excess tension.
11. Rest from head to
toe
My partner swore by this: Focus on each muscle, starting with your toes, and telling yourself, “My feet are falling asleep,” “My right leg is very sleepy,” “My stomach is asleep,” while resting each limb. He says he never crossed his waist!
12. Try 4-7-8
exercises
Why can't I sleep even though I'm tired?
Scientifically speaking, focusing on your breathing lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, which is a key to sleep.
So try this sleep:
Hale Pull for four seconds . Hold your breath for seven seconds. Exhale for eight seconds.
